Fear. All you have to do is listen to the news or go to the store and you will see anxiety running rampant. Fear is not a new thing though. COVID-19 is not the creator of fear, our world has been living in fear since the fall. 18% of adults in the US suffer from anxiety, and 7.4 % of kids. We literally live in a world that is paralyzed with fear! Given the statistics it would be foolish of us to believe that Christians don’t struggle with anxiety and fear. So what does the bible say about fear? In Joshua Chapter 1 verse 7 God says to Joshua, “Be strong and courageous,” something He has repeated to Moses and Israelites SEVERAL times. Then again in verse 9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” As I was studying the Israelites from Egypt to the Promise Land, I seemed to continually read “be strong and courageous”. I told you fear wasn’t new……There is a second part of that verse though, “for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Why did God say this? Why does it matter to anyone if God goes with them? Well it mattered to the Israelites because God had proven that He would take care of them. God had taken care of them when He passed over their families in Egypt, when He brought them out of Egypt to the Red Sea and they walked across on dry land, when He provided quail and manna in the desert, and many other times. Don’t we have the same story too? When fear starts to take over we have to remember what God has done in the past. The times He’s provided for us, comforted us, showed us there was nothing to be worried about (I don’t know about you but God loves to saw I told you there was nothing to worry about). COVID-19 is “new”, fear and God are not. God has provided for us up until now and we have to believe that he will continue to do so.
